BACKGROUND: As soon launched in 1799, The Trust sailed the Indian Ocean and the Island of France (Mauritius). On his arrival in Port Louis, the co-signatories of the vessel offered the command to Robert Surcouf, a young corsair St. Malo which operated in the Bay of Bengal for four years. The Malouin agreed, but he strove to perfect the building. In October 1800 with the Trust, Surcouf captured Kent, a big English indiaman 1 200 tons carrying further 250 soldiers. This glorious feat of arms pushed England to put a price on the head of the pirate. Kent was brought back to Port Louis, then sold to a Danish merchant. Surcouf left the Ile de France in January 1801 to return to La Rochelle, he reached 72 days later with a cargo valued at 2 million francs. In 1803, the Trust was captured on the African coast. In 1816, still afloat, is found in the hands of an English merchant who was very proud of his famous boat.
